On the afternoon of March 28, 2025, a massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Mandalay, causing widespread destruction and loss of life across central Myanmar. Affected regions include Shan State, Mandalay, Sagaing, Naypyidaw, and Taungoo, with the death toll continuing to rise.
Shan State, particularly Aungban and Nyaungshwe in the Inle region, has suffered severe damage. Reports indicate that approximately 60 lives have been lost, and around 100 people have sustained injuries. The Inle region urgently requires humanitarian aid, including food and other essential supplies.
Amid this unfolding crisis, at approximately 2:30 PM on March 28, military airstrikes targeted Kan Gyi Village in Naungcho Township, destroying homes. Additionally, helicopters were observed patrolling Mong Ko and Laicha in southern Shan State throughout the night.
At this critical moment, the focus must be on supporting those affected by the earthquake, not escalating violence. We urge authorities to halt military operations immediately.
We appeal to international governments, NGOs, and both local and overseas communities to extend their support. Assistance should be prioritized for grassroots organizations directly aiding affected communities.
Our deepest condolences go out to those who have lost loved ones and homes in this devastating disaster.
